most of us take it for granted that we have shoes, and forget that many people in the world cannot afford them. as shoes are often difficult items to get in materially poor communities, these shoes are made of cheap, everyday discarded materials, evocative of the desperation of the poor. the baby shoes are made from blue tarpaulin and the men’s shoes from cardboard. the luxury shoe carton in which they are presented refers to themes of politics, consumerism and inequality.
